How bad does sex hurt postpartum for that first time?

We attempted to have sex five weeks postpartum, but it felt really tight down there. Is that normal? Does it usually hurt the first time postpartum? I always thought it would be looser since a baby came through there not too long ago.

Usually doctors say wait 6 wks for a reason. It is suppose to hurt at first but eventually will get better. I, and many others I know, were told to wait the 6 wks; for our 6 wk postpartum checkup.
